In 2011, Shanghai United Foundation (SUF) hosted the very first “Egg Walk Challenge” with the goal of being able to provide an egg a day for underprivileged children in rural China. Every team that entered into the “Egg Walk Challenge” was required to walk 50km within 12hrs on a predetermined day.
Due its success in 2011, the “Egg Walkathon” as it is now called, has become an annual event, and has been able to support other causes that affect rural children in China, including education. This year the SUF-sponsored organization Stepping Stones joined the Egg Walk, and pledged to raise at least 20,000 RMB for migrant children in rural China.
Despite the downpour and gail force winds, our Stepping Stones team, which was comprised of six “eggs” (walkers), started at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum ready to fulfill the pledge we had made.
2018 Egg Walkathon is calling for teams!
The Public-fundraising Team Rules were as follows… “Each team must fulfill their pledge of 20K before 12am on May 31st in order to be able to allocate the funds raised to a project of their choice. If the walkers are unable to reach their target, the funds will go to the Shanghai United Foundation’s project funding pool to support an open call for public projects.”
Thanks to the commitment and perseverance of our runners, Stepping Stones surpassed their original target of 20,000 RMB! All the money that Stepping Stones received will be used to purchase equipment for the new Videolink program, to allow volunteers to teach English to students in remote areas through the internet, including laptop, TV, video conference system and Internet services.
Stepping Stones would also like to thank this year’s organizers, without whom none of this would have been possible. This opportunity allows not only Stepping Stones, but also the entire Shanghai charitable community, to raise money in a fun and safe manner, for which we are all very grateful.
