Stepping Stones has collaborated with many local and international high schools, universities and companies since its inception in 2006. Partnerships with prestigious schools and companies as diverse as NYU, Duke, Georgia Tech, Texas Instrument, Notre Dame, London Business School, Bloomberg, Bollore Logistics, Deloitte, L’Orélal, Disney, GAP, Google, Hasbro, PwC and Target have achieved outstanding results in schools and community centers for disadvantaged children in Shanghai and rural China, and through the internet.

Please note that Stepping Stones charges a fee to student and corporate groups to offset the costs incurred in project set-up and helps us sustain our organization and fulfill our mission to improve the education and general welfare of disadvantaged children in China.
1. Teaching Online
- Description: Volunteers from corporate and student groups are needed to teach online English, digital literacy or other subjects to disadvantaged children in rural China. For regular programs, rotation among volunteers is possible. Volunteers can also contribute to the development of teaching materials (e.g., educational videos), if interested.
- Time: On a regular basis preferred (i.e., once a week or every other week); One-off project also possible.
- Requirements: Fluent or native level of Chinese to teach classes other than English. Fluent or native level of English to teach English. Enjoy interacting with children.
- Location: Online.
- Training, resources & support provided by Stepping Stones.
- Lecture on non-profit sector, education situation in China and/or migrants in China delivered by Stepping Stones, if required.
- Project costs: Fees for the projects vary according to the number of participants and specific project requirements, the project nature and the scope of the work. Out-of-pocket expenses such as transportation, insurance, entry tickets and teaching supplies need to be covered in full. Discounts may be available for regular projects as compared with one-off projects.
2. Teaching Offline – Shanghai
- Description: Volunteers from corporate and student groups are needed to teach English, digital literacy or other subjects to disadvantaged children in Shanghai. For regular programs, rotation among volunteers is possible. Volunteers can also contribute to the development of teaching materials (e.g., educational videos), if interested.
- Time: On a regular basis preferred (i.e., once a week or every other week); One-off project also possible.
- Requirements: Fluent or native level of Chinese to teach classes other than English. Fluent or native level of English to teach English. Enjoy interacting with children.
- Location: Migrant school, kindergarten or community center in Shanghai.
- Training, resources & support provided by Stepping Stones.
- Lecture on non-profit sector, education situation in China and/or migrants in China delivered by Stepping Stones, if required.
- Project costs: Fees for the projects vary according to the number of participants and specific project requirements, the project nature and the scope of the work. 3. Taking children on an outing or learning trip – Shanghai
- Description: Volunteers from corporate and student groups are needed to take disadvantaged children on an outing or learning trip in Shanghai. Each volunteer accompanies one or two children during the outing or trip.
- Time: One-off project. Possible to organize project on a working day or on a weekend.
- Location: Museum, zoo, aquarium, your company’s office, etc.
- Training & support provided by Stepping Stones.
- Lecture on non-profit sector, education situation in China and/or migrants in China delivered by Stepping Stones, if required.
- Project costs: Fees for the projects vary according to the number of participants and specific project requirements, the project nature and the scope of the work. Out-of-pocket expenses such as transportation, insurance, entry tickets and teaching supplies need to be covered in full. Discounts may be available for regular projects as compared with one-off projects.
4. Commission a lecture on non-profit management, or issues relating to education and migration in China
- Description: Stepping Stones can provide lectures on a variety of topics to student and corporate groups. Lecture are delivered by one of Stepping Stones’ senior staff, which include Corinne Hua (Executive Director), Dr. Sebastien Carrier (Program Director) or other team members as relevant.
- Time: Working day preferred, weekend may also be possible
- Location: Online or offline.
- Project costs: Fees for the projects vary according to the number of participants and specific project requirements.
