Every semester, Stepping Stones sends hundreds of volunteers to teach English to disadvantaged children in Shanghai and rural areas. In order to ensure quality teaching and sustained support for our volunteers, we provide basic teacher training to our volunteers, develop our own English curriculum and pay regular visits to observe classes and give advice. We are looking for professional TEFL teachers and teacher trainers to join and help us with training, curriculum development and site visits so that we are able to provide better support for our volunteers.
Here are some of the volunteering opportunities for professional teachers:
1. Class Observations (Shanghai, rural areas or online)
Responsibility: Observe English lessons by our volunteers and give post-observation feedback.
Major Requirements:
- Fluent English
- 2+ years of TEFL teacher training experience
- A passion for education and a keen interest in teacher development
- Open-minded and easy-going
- Patient and flexible
- A good understanding of how English is taught in Chinese primary schools
- Able to commit for at least 4 site visits per semester.
2. Volunteer trainer (Shanghai or online)
Responsibility: Conduct volunteer trainings and workshops to volunteers.
Major Requirements:
- Fluent English
- 2+ years of TEFL teacher training experience
- A passion for education and a keen interest in teacher development
- Open-minded and easy-going
- Patient and flexible
- A good understanding of how English is taught in Chinese primary schools
- Able to run at least two training/ teaching workshop per semester.
3. Curriculum Development
Responsibility: Assist with tailoring Stepping Stones curriculum and creating lesson plans for the specific needs of different programs, e.g. summer school, rural volunteering.
Major Requirements:
- Be interested in curriculum development and lesson planning
- Fluent English
- 2+ years of TEFL teaching experience
- Curriculum development experience is preferred
- A passion for education and volunteering
- Open-minded and easy-going
- Patient and flexible
- A good understanding of the Chinese educational environment.
- Able to work independently and take responsibility for product delivery.
